From Amazon.co.uk ?Shoot me!? challenged Lee Morgan when his girl friend pointed a gun at him during a row in a nightclub. Sadly, she did, and jazz lost one of its finest trumpeters. Morgan rarely made a bad recording. He was of the generation that produced Clifford Brown and after Brownie he was the most potent trumpet improviser of the day. This 1963 session shows him at his best, patching blues into hard bop and creating the ’funky’ style that was to become the trademark of Blue Note’s small group sessions. Contrasting with Morgan’s pungent half-valve blues effects is the tenor of his front line partner, the young Joe Henderson, his playing hard and yet warm, and already showing the distinctive style that was to make him one of the leading tenor players. Barry Harris, a tasteful and seriously under-rated pianist leads the outstanding rhythm section, with support from bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins. The title tune, one of five potent tunes written by Morgan and included here, became a big hit, and it’s still infectious to this day. --Steve Voce
